Artist Statement:
Birds
The landscape is the interaction of human efforts and the natural world’s response. As an observer of this interaction, these photographs display the small yet large place that birds exist in a landscape that is both bigger than them and to us as well.
Donald Hyatt is a photographer based in Rochester, NY. He received his BFA in photography at SUNY New Paltz and is trained in traditional darkroom and digital imaging processes. Don primarily uses a large format camera to create traditional darkroom prints, cyanotypes, photogravures and digital metallic prints. Through this diverse variety of techniques, Don uses photography to encourage understanding of place. He often travels via bicycle as this allows for a slow pace of curious observation, and unique opportunities of interacting with the world at large and with people along the way. Both long distance and long duration photographic projects are a way Don creates a visual language to understand the world, embodying the passing of time as seen through the many photographs that he creates.
